I-EA-T has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GPSC and TTM to conduct a joint study on the development of a power project to supply electricity to the Southern Region Industrial Estate, Songkhla Province. The project aims to promote low carbon society, help increase investors' confidence and drive economic activity in the area, in particular, the Thai rubber industry and its value chain, which will enable the southern part of Thailand to become a manufacturing center for comprehensive rubber products. Successful implementation of the initiative will lead to expansions in other eligible areas.

Mr. Veeris Ammarapala, Governor of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (I-EA-T), revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony was held between I-EA-T, Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited (GPSC), and Trans Thai-Malaysia (TTM). The purpose of the cooperation is to conduct a joint study on the development of a power project to create a stable regional power supply using natural gas in driving the Southern Region Industrial Estate and investment in the industrial estate, Songkhla Province. The cooperation, which has a two-year implementation period (2022-2023), will enhance power security, an essential basic utility, in the region and raise investors’ confidence. The I-EA-T-run Southern Regional Industrial Estate in Songkhla was selected by I-EA-T on account of its potential and suitability for a wide range of energy development models. The project, which aims to improve the efficiency and stability of power management in the region, will also expand to other eligible areas.

“Under the partnership, I-EA-T will provide relevant area-specific information on the short-and long-term electricity demand, as well as rules and regulations applicable to the development of the project to strengthen power security in the area for future investment expansion, which will transform the region into a manufacturing center for comprehensive rubber products. This will also help Thai rubber farmers, who play an important role in the supply chain, to add value to their products and increase their competitiveness in the future,” said the I-EA-T governor.

Mrs. Rosaya Teinwan, Executive Vice President - Business Development of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, said that with GPSC’s expertise in energy and power innovation, the company is well-equipped to contribute to the development of a natural gas power plant, which offers high power system stability, and a renewable power plant, which uses different types of clean, renewable energy sources. This will support the manufacturing sector while helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move the region toward becoming a low carbon society, in alignment with the national and global trends. In addition, a smart energy management platform is readily available to drive the project to success, becoming a model power plant in the area.

“Under the collaboration, the three organizations will jointly conduct a study and select relevant technology and appropriate business investment models. Moreover, the Southern Region Industrial Estate is located in an area with a potential for a power plant development with its accessible fuel resources such as natural gas, supplied by TTM’s natural gas pipelines, and agricultural biomass fuel. Convenient access to fuel supply will facilitate the power plant’s effort to meet the demand of the industrial estate’ manufacturing clients while ensuring optimal use of resources, which will lead to increased energy stability,” said Mrs. Rosaya.

Mr. Komgrit Lohpetch, President and CEO of Trans Thai–Malaysia (Thailand) Limited or TTM, said that the company, as a provider of gas pipeline and gas separation services in the Malaysia – Thailand Joint Development Area, is readily able to support natural gas transportation. Currently, natural gas in the area is transported by land to a gas separation plant in the Chana District of Songkhla via a network of pipelines, passing through five Songkhla’s districts. In the future, additional pipelines can also be connected to the network to reach other areas to elevate power stability and security in the southern part of Thailand. If the project is proven to be feasible, the company is prepared to support the distribution of natural gas to ensure a sufficient supply of fuel for electricity generation, the manufacturing sector, and the utility system. This will contribute to an increase in energy security while effectively driving economic development in the country’s southern region.
