GPSC has joined hands with Map Ta Phut Municipality and Khao Huay Mahad Forest Restoration and Water Conservation Group to preserve forests and increase the number of green areas under “Khao Huay Mahad Reforestation Project Year 9”. The objectives of this project are to increase the biodiversity, to absorb carbon dioxide, create ecological balance for the coexistence of communities, industries and environment, and eventually achieve the target of Net Zero by 2060.

Mrs. Rosaya Teinwan, Executive Vice President - Business Development, of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, revealed that, today (30 September 2022), GPSC has cooperated with Map Ta Phut Municipality and Khao Huay Mahad Forest Restoration and Water Conservation Group, Mueang District, Rayong Province, to carry out “Khao Huay Mahad Reforestation Project Year 9” in Huay Pong Sub-district, Mueang District, Rayong Province. The company has also collaborated with different networks in this province, e.g., local agencies, local communities, suppliers and more than 100 volunteers of the company to jointly conduct the restoration of watershed forests and increase the biodiversity of plant species while creating ecological balance near communities and industrial sites, which is highly significant for the coexistence. And at the meantime, Rayong Province shall be developed to be an eco-industrial town. The aforementioned project is intended to increase capacity of the areas to absorb carbon dioxide, which is an important mechanism for the company to perform environmental management and to achieve the Net Zero Emissions target by 2060.

The project implementation plan will place an emphasis on the increase of green areas by reforesting 15 plant species in the deteriorated forest (plot 3), covering the area of around 7 rai, to increase the diversity of plant species. The said plant species include 13 species of forest trees, most of which (900 trees) are the slow growing ones that have the ability to absorb carbon dioxide efficiently, and 2 species of undergrowth plants, or medicinal plants amounting to 100 plants. The total amount of accumulated biological carbon sequestration of plot 1 and plot 2 that have been implemented previously, combined with the plot 3 above, is equal to 524 tons CO2e. Not only does the project help restore the ecosystem but it also generates income for the communities around the forest areas by growing medicinal plants and letting the local people turn them into various products, adding value to the communities in the long run.

This cooperation is believed to raise the awareness of conservation of natural resources in the area. This is because the communities and the various sectors involved are encouraged to have engagement in the tree planting in order to increase the number of green areas in Rayong Province, which is considered an area with diversified native plant and animal species, and also a major source of economic development of the country. Accordingly, the appropriate care of the environment is regarded as such an important factor that can enhance the quality of life, economy, community, society and environment in a sustainable manner.
