Nakhon Sawan Province teams up with PTT to develop clean energy innovations, ready to be a Smart City with Smart Energy

17 Aug 2022

The cooperation focuses mainly on the development of energy innovation projects, e.g., solar energy generation, energy storage systems, energy management, and use of electric vehicles to promote commutation and transportation. Meanwhile, the said collaboration is aimed to support Nakhon Sawan Province to be a Smart City with clean energy and a learning center for sustainable energy management.

Today (17 August 2022), Mr. Chayan Sirimas, Provincial Governor of Nakhon Sawan Province, and Dr. Buranin Rattanasombat, Senior Executive Vice President of Innovation and New Ventures of PTT Public Company Limited, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Research and Development of Smart Energy in Nakhon Sawan Province between Nakhon Sawan Province and PTT Public Company Limited at 42C The Chic Hotel Nakhonsawan. Thereby, the said event was witnessed by executives from government agencies and relevant agencies.

Mr. Chayan Sirimas, Provincial Governor of Nakhon Sawan Province, said Nakhon Sawan Province is located in the lower northern region or the upper central region of Thailand; therefore, it has been recognized as "Gateway to the North". The province covers an area of approximately 9,597 square kilometers or 5,998,548 rai. In 2020, Nakhon Sawan Province had gross provincial product of 111,441 million baht, the second in the North after Chiang Mai, and gross provincial product per capita of 121,070 baht per person/year. The agricultural area in this province accounts for 4,700,565 rai, or 78.36% of all the province's area, and there are 702 industrial factories with an investment value of 92,831 million baht. Due to the foreseeable opportunities and potential of Nakhon Sawan Province, the guidelines for development of this province have been established in accordance with Thailand's 20-Year National Strategy, the master plan under National Strategy and Country Reform Plans, and the (draft) 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan. The important issues of development are related to renewable energy, infrastructure, and facilities that can support electric vehicles. Nakhon Sawan Province places an emphasis on the development of clean energy based on BCG MODEL, which is in line with UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) held in Scotland. The province is situated in an area where the intensity of sunlight is suitable for solar energy generation. In addition, there are some water areas suitable for installing floating solar cells, such as Bueng Boraphet and Bueng Senat, which can be promoted to be important sources of renewable energy, beneficial for agricultural sector, households, and business sector in the surrounding areas. Annually, Nakhon Sawan Province generates at least 160 megawatts of biomass power from more than 1,700,000 tons of rice straw, which not only helps reduce burning of rice straw but also increases income for the farmers there. Referring to electric vehicles that are expected to replace petrol cars in the future, Nakhon Sawan Province is the gateway to the north with a distance of 239 kilometers from Bangkok; thus, it is considered a suitable distance to stop for charging, especially for commercial transport vehicles that need to stop only at the necessary points. As a consequence, it is appropriate to develop Nakhon Sawan Province to be an EV Charging Station Hub, and it is also deemed as an opportunity for area-based development, which will benefit other related business sectors.

Dr. Buranin Rattanasombat, Senior Executive Vice President of Innovation and New Ventures of PTT Public Company Limited, revealed that PTT Group is committed to maintain energy stability for Thailand, expand its business by seeking innovations that can guarantee energy security in the future, and step into new businesses beyond energy. This cooperation seems as a good opportunity for PTT Group to make use of knowledge, technologies, and innovations on energy to support Nakhon Sawan Province. Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, which is specialized in energy innovation, is also ready to offer solutions and technologies that can satisfy the varied needs and respond to the changing directions of the world's energy. The company will study and develop innovative smart energy projects covering both upstream and downstream, e.g., power generation from solar cells, energy storage system, and smart mobility by other subsidiaries related to electric vehicle (EV) business of PTT Group. This can be conducted by encouraging the use of electric vehicles (EV), the installation of EV charging stations in the potential areas, and the use of clean energy in various sectors such as local government agencies, transport sector, and tourism sector. This is all to promote and prepare Nakhon Sawan Province to become a Smart City with clean energy. In addition, this is an approach to push Thailand towards a low-carbon society and at the meantime, to be a learning center for other communities to apply this knowledge in order to enhance their quality of life and nurture environment at the same time so that all are able to grow together in a sustainable manner.
