GPSC launches the project "Seedlings for Reforestation and Wildlife" to increase the areas of carbon sequestration with the target of 10,000 rais in 2030

09 Oct 2023

GPSC kicked off the project "Seedlings for Reforestation and Wildlife", starting with 230 rais in the national reserved forest areas in Loei Province, and ready to expand the reforestation area by 1,000-1,500 rais every year. The target of this project is to cover the reforestation area of 10,000 rais in 2030, which will increase the proportion of carbon sequestration to the level that enables the company to achieve the Net Zero target by 2060, and meanwhile correspond to the business schemes for sustainability.

Dr. Pailin Chuchottaworn, Chairman of the Board of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, said that GPSC had launched the project "Seedlings for Reforestation and Wildlife" in several national reserved forest areas, including Phu Kao Kaew Forest Park, Dong Pak Chom Forest Park, Khok Pha Dam Forest Park, Khok Nong Kha Forest Park, and Phu Bo Bit Forest Park in Na Dok Kham Sub-district, Na Duang District, Loei Province. This project is under the 2-million-rai reforestation scheme of PTT Group and government agencies, which is intended to restore the forest ecosystem and increase the proportion of green space in Thailand. According to the sustainability management goals and business strategies, GPSC is determined to increase the use of clean energy in electricity generation and, at the same time, protect and restore the environment. This will also help the company to achieve the ultimate goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

GPSC has planned to increase the green space, according to PTT Group's intention, to cover 10,000 rais by 2030 by means of reforestation along with the forest restoration, and then the company shall take care of the said areas in a continual manner for not less than 10 years. In the first year, GPSC has begun the reforestation on an area of 230 rais in the national reserved forest areas in Pak Chom District and Na Duang District, Loei Province. Thereby, the said operation has already received the permission from the Royal Forest Department. These forest areas used to be very fertile in the past, but recently it has become deteriorated. Therefore, it is highly necessary to bring them back to life so that they can be fertile again. GPSC, in collaboration with the Royal Forest Department, has initiated the reforestation in order to create the sources that can absorb and store approximately 114,237.5 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, with a plan to increase the reforestation areas by approximately 1,000-1,500 rais per year throughout the country in accordance to Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program, or T-VER.

So far, the 2-million-rai reforestation scheme, initiated by the companies in PTT Group, including GPSC, together with the Royal Forest Department, the Department of National parks Wildlife and Plant, and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, has increased the new forest areas, and meanwhile maintained and restored the existing ones. This operation is considered one of the strategies focusing on business for sustainability, which will eventually enable Thailand to achieve the targets of Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero.
