During April 21-22, 2025, Professor Dr. Supot Teachavorasinskun, Chairman of the Board, along with the Board of Directors and Mr. Worawat Pitayasiri, CEO of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power and smart energy flagship of PTT Group, visited the People’s Republic of China to study Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The delegation was warmly welcomed by executives from Chinergy, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), and China Huaneng, who shared insights on Generation IV SMR technology with advanced safety features.

During the visit, the GPSC executives toured an HTGR (High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor) SMR power plant in Shandong Province. With an installed capacity of 200 MW, this reactor uses helium gas as a coolant and employs Pebble Bed fuel technology to prevent fuel meltdown—even in emergency coolant loss scenarios—demonstrating the highest safety standards of SMR technology. Having invested over 30 years in research and development, China has successfully established the world’s first commercially operational Generation IV SMR plant, which began supplying electricity to the grid in late December 2023.

The purpose of this study visit was to explore opportunities for clean energy development using HTGR technology. This advanced modular system offers superior safety, higher efficiency in electricity and high-pressure steam generation compared to conventional SMRs, and critically zero carbon emissions. By adopting such innovations, GPSC aims to replace fossil fuels, transition to eco-friendly energy, and achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060, while ensuring sustainable energy security for Thailand’s power grid and industrial sector.
