GPSC teams up with Axens to collaborate on DMX™ carbon capture technology, promoting Decarbonization in sustainable electricity sector and beyond

25 Sep 2025

GPSC has joined hands with Axens Group from France to conduct feasibility studies for the implementation of DMXTM carbon capture technology to fossil power generation assets and expand beyond to other industries. The first step of the collaboration is expected to take about 2 years. The power generation and process industrial steam from fossil fuels will be cleaner, resorting to lower carbon energy, heading towards the target of Net Zero Emissions by 2060 while contributing to establish a more sustainable and stable electricity system in Thailand.

Mr. Sirimet Leepagorn, President and Acting Chief Operating Officer of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, revealed that, on 24 September 2025, GPSC signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mr. Stephane Wermester, Commercial Vice President – Asia Pacific of Axens Group, the French leading company who provides a complete range of solutions of natural gas treatment, conversions options as well as carbon capture & storage options, presided by Associate Professor Dr. Arnat Watanasungsuit, Managing Director, Hydrocarbon Solutions (Thailand) Co., Ltd. This MOU aims to conduct feasibility studies around DMXTM carbon capture technology, a CO2 post-combustion capture process based on absorption by a demixing solvent, a patented process stemming from IFP Energies Nouvelles’ Research and marketed by Axens. Thus, this is considered as an important component for CO2 removal technologies integrated with power generation to produce clean energy in addition to the other renewable energy sources in Thailand, which is believed to satisfy the demand for cleaner and lower carbon electricity.

Mr. Stephane Wermester, Vice President - Commercial Asia Pacific of Axens Group, a global leader in advanced technology and catalytic solutions, said that the DMX™ process was developed to capture CO2 from flue gases of coal-fired power plants and steel production. It can also be used for capturing CO2 from other types of emitters such as waste incinerator, cement plant, steel manufacturers, etc. This process is well adapted for CO2 capture on industrial flue gas or industrial gas when the CO2 partial pressures are low to medium which is well fitted with Utility sector. This is also in line with GPSC's strategy to seek the enhancement of power generation assets so that the advanced CO2 removal technologies with power generation systems in Thailand can be enhanced with more stability and security. This MOU will allow Axens and GPSC to collaborate on deploying innovative carbon capture solutions in Thailand and the Asia Pacific region.

Mr. Rachid Chennit- Vice President - Low Carbon Solutions and Gas at Axens highlighted the company's commitment to industrial decarbonization and its role in addressing climate change. Axens' DMX™carbon capture technology, developed with IFP Energies Nouvelles, exemplifies their dedication to providing efficient, affordable and scalable CO₂ capture solutions. This partnership with GPSC represents a significant milestone in the journey towards the deployment of scalable carbon capture solutions for hard-to-abate sectors. By leveraging Axens' technological expertise and GPSC's operational excellence, the collaboration aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the power sector and hard to abate industries. Moreover, the partnership underscores the importance of industrial collaboration and technological innovation in achieving net-zero ambitions. Axens expresses gratitude to GPSC and all contributors to this initiative and look forward to jointly advancing the deployment of efficient carbon capture technologies across the power and industrial sectors.

Lastly, Mr. Sirimet Leepagorn, added that the jointly feasibility collaboration of both parties is as highly significant to promote Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) in Thailand, which is already one of the key decarbonization studies by GPSC. Our goal is to explore additional opportunities to develop more enhancement of clean electricity and steam, aligning with GPSC’s main mission in helping alleviate the issues of global warming. The collaboration assisted by the experts from Axens will enable GPSC to acquire knowledge and prove this second-generation amine-based process using a solvent that reduces the energy intensity for carbon capture. Finally, the net zero target of Thailand and the World will not be achievable without the CO2 removal technologies, and we hope our joint efforts expand beyond to other industrial applications.
