GPSC and OBEC team up in an effort to enhance teacher competence by providing professional development training on STEM-based curriculum for primary school teachers from 16 institutes

08 Nov 2021

As part of an effort to elevate Thailand’s educational quality to meet the needs of future industrial growth, GPSC and OBEC have initiated the “Fostering Teacher Competency…toward a New Way of Learning” project. The objective is to provide training on STEM-based curriculum for primary school teachers from 16 schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission and the Department of Local Administration. The training aims to prepare teachers for a new way of learning, where technology and innovation are integrated into the basic curriculum, allowing students to be the center of a practical learning experience that aligns with their local context.

Mr. Narongchai Visutrachai, Senior Vice President - Government Relations and Public Affairs of Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC, the innovative power flagship of PTT Group, revealed that on November 6, 2021, the “Fostering Teacher Competency…toward a New Way of Learning” training was held for the first time via the Zoom meeting platform. Participants were teachers from schools that are supported by GPSC, including 15 primary schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission and one school under the Department of Local Administration. The project was a cooperation between the public sector, educational institutions, and the private sector to heighten the standards of teachers and educational personnel in Thailand through the incorporation of OBEC-endorsed STEM principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into the design of educational media aimed for online learning as opposed to conventional classroom teaching.

GPSC is committed to promoting the development of students’ skills through technology and innovation, which will efficiently help elevate Thai students’ academic competence. In line with this objective, the STEM concept is integrated into the basic education curriculum stipulated by the Ministry of Education, whereby teachers offer students of different age groups more fun and hands-on learning experience rather than traditional theory-oriented lessons. Practical classroom activities are assessed across a variety of criteria, with a focus on learners’ ability to analyze and understand relevant key concepts.

Through the teacher training program, participants have not only gained more confidence in carrying out their duties but have also been equipped with necessary skills from activity design process and use of creativity to professional and leadership skills. Additionally, teachers who participated in this training have developed a better understanding of curriculum assessment and will be able to use the knowledge to better develop a curriculum based on their local contexts while ensuring its alignment with the Basic Educational Curriculum and the educational policy set by the Ministry of Education, which aims to elevate Thailand’s educational quality to meet future changes in technology and innovation. Participants’ training hours also count toward their performance evaluation as part of the academic ranking specification for teachers and educational personnel established by the Office of the Teacher Civil Service and Educational Personnel Commission (OTEPC).

GPSC wishes to ensure that Thai students’ potential is fully realized so that these young generations will subsequently become a valuable part of the workforce and qualify for their local labor market, which will help strengthen the local economy and prepare it for future industrial growth. In this era of creativity and innovation, teachers must not only be knowledgeable but also have to possess a solid grasp of the subject matter to successfully create an appropriate “student-centered” learning environment and experience for their students.
